Here Comes The Bride – A Dream of Our Times

Christmas is my favorite season. It is a time to have our hearts (and tummies) filled to overflowing with love and all things good & beautiful. It is also a time to slow down from the busy, busy, busyness of the year – to let the wheels slowly come to a gentle halt, let the engines cool, and get a new commission for a new destination for the year to come. Exciting, beautiful, wonderful time of year. So I am taking time to unplug and fully immerse myself in this season, being fully present and clearing my soul for space for God to pour His plans for 2015. Meanwhile, I want to give another moment of glory to a few favorite posts and share them with you through the month of December. Have a very merry Christmas, and I’ll see you again in the new year!

***

A few nights ago I had a dream. I felt God speaking to me through the dream about His bride and the heart of Jesus our Bridegroom, as well as the times we are living in. I want to share it with you.

The dream:

I was in a familiar place; somewhere that felt comfortable and familiar. I saw many familiar faces; people I knew well.

Suddenly, one of them came to me and said, “Hurry get ready, your wedding is in a few hours!” I was paralyzed with shock. “I’m only getting married in June next year, we’re still one year away! I haven’t done any planning, I’m not prepared!!” This couldn’t be happening – I decided to investigate.

As I walked around the corner, I saw that the adjoining room was a large hall filled with people decorating & preparing for the wedding ceremony… and my Bridegroom was already fully dressed and standing at the altar, waiting for me.

As my mind reeled and raced to come to terms with the situation, a bustling group of people came around me to do my hair and make-up. One of them held up a magnificent, beautiful, emerald lace gown and told me to “put on your wedding gown.” Ok… I thought I was getting married in a white gown. Never mind that people are fixing my hair, make-up, and wedding date without asking me; now I don’t get even get to choose the color of my gown? Great.

Oh well, at least the dress is pretty. Still in a daze, I put on my wedding gown… and saw to my horror that I had a paunch right where my flat belly used to be!! “How did I get so out of shape?” and other thoughts of similar nature swirled round my already spinning head. As I stared in the mirror, all I could think of was how beautiful the gown was and how my body wasn’t befitting the occasion and the dress.

Still, I couldn’t help noticing how the whole look would have felt more complete with elegant details like jewelry that stands out, especially something timeless such as antique aquamarine rings by Kalmar Antiques, which would have added a soft, graceful touch to the overall bridal style.

As if that wasn’t enough, the realization that I couldn’t remember my vows hit me. I was about to walk down the aisle without knowing my vows! That threw me into a frenzy and the rest of my dream was spent trying to remember the vows I was supposed to make.

The interpretation:

Matthew 24: 36-39 says, “But about that day or hour no one knows, not even the angels in heaven, nor the Son,but only the Father. As it was in the days of Noah, so it will be at the coming of the Son of Man. For in the days before the flood, people were eating and drinking, marrying and giving in marriage, up to the day Noah entered the ark; and they knew nothing about what would happen until the flood came and took them all away. That is how it will be at the coming of the Son of Man.”

We, the bride of Jesus, need to get prepared.

We need to get out of our comfort zones, get off our laurels. Many of us are comfortable where we are with the people we are with – TOO comfortable to realize that the time is drawing near when Jesus is going to return. In fact, Jesus is already waiting and yearning for His bride… but He will delay His return so that His bride can get ready and prepare herself, that she may be presented to Him as a pure and spotless bride.

Ephesians 5:27 says that Jesus is working in the Church “to present her to himself as a radiant church, without stain or wrinkle or any other blemish, but holy and blameless.” He has chosen the dress that we will wear, but will we be in good shape when the time come for us to put on our wedding garments? Laziness and complacency need to go! The Church, the Beloved, needs to understand the urgency of the hour and the intense desire of her Bridegroom for her. He is waiting for her, longing to finally be one with her – He cannot bear the distance that has been there since Genesis, and He cannot wait for the nearness and oneness that will come in revelations.

The significance of the vows is three-fold:

1. A time is coming when the Bride will have to acknowledge Jesus publicly. That is where wedding vows are said, aren’t they, publicly? I felt God say to me that the day is coming when the Church will be made to stand in public and speak about God. This will happen in 2 ways –

  • Sharing publicly about God through media. This is a social media generation, and so much negativity is going around the world wide web. But we are living in a time where the power of God is going to work in and through us to show the world the glory and the greatness of God. Then we need to make a choice – acknowledge God publicly, or not? To do so would welcome mockery, cynicism, rejection from our friends… to not do so is to reject the Bridegroom standing before us at the altar.
  • Persecution, where our allegiance will be tested. Will we choose to publicly acknowledge Jesus, even when it gets dangerous to do so? If the Bride is still in her comfort zone and wallowing in complacency, it is going to be very hard for her to stand in the face of trials.

Luke 12: 8-11 says, “I tell you, whoever publicly acknowledges me before others, the Son of Man will also acknowledge before the angels of God. But whoever disowns me before others will be disowned before the angels of God. And everyone who speaks a word against the Son of Man will be forgiven, but anyone who blasphemes against the Holy Spirit will not be forgiven. When you are brought before synagogues, rulers and authorities, do not worry about how you will defend yourselves or what you will say, for the Holy Spirit will teach you at that time what you should say.”

These circumstances sound bleak, but Jesus tells us not to worry! At that time, Holy Spirit will tell us what to say. He is our guide, teacher, comforter, and helper – He will never leave us nor forsake us!

2. Remember the promises made to God. Many of us have made promises to God – be it in a moment of passion, a moment of need, or a promise we truly intend to keep – and NOW is the time to make good on those promises. Don’t delay any longer, for the time we have left is very, very short.

“When you vow a vow to God, do not delay paying it” Ecclesiastes 5:4

3. Many in the Church have forgotten their first love. We need to go back to the love we once had, do the things we did at first. Too many of us have gotten caught up either in complacency or busyness – in the process of serving God, let us not forget God. He loves it when we want to serve Him, but what He looks for at the end of the day is our heart – He wants intimacy, love, communion. He is not coming back for a servant; He is coming back for a Bride.

“Yet I hold this against you: You have forsaken the love you had at first.” Revelation 2:4

“”This is what the LORD says: ‘I remember the devotion of your youth, how as a bride you loved me and followed me through the wilderness, through a land not sown.'” Jeremiah 2:2

Jesus is coming back soon… for us, His bride. He is so in love, and what a joyous day it will be for all who have been preparing & waiting for it. We need to get ready.

A Word In Season: The Sacrifice of Praise

“In these days, more than any other time in history, My children must learn the importance of the sacrifice of praise.

The sacrifice of praise is to call out to Me with hope, expectation, and rejoicing in the midst of trials & tribulation. To praise Me in the midst of suffering — that is the sacrifice.

You need to learn how to call out to me in adversity, because the days are evil and will only get darker as the end draws near.

Do you know that the word Hosanna means “Oh, save!” … The cry of Hosanna!  has become a shout of praise & celebration, but it originally meant “Save!” or “Help!’. This word was used to address a King with a need.

When My children Israel called out “Hosanna!”, waving palm branches and rejoicing as Jesus rode into town on a donkey, they unwittingly set an example of what the sacrifice of praise looks like —

It looks like crying out to Me, “Lord, save me! Help me!”… with a heart of rejoicing.

It may seem like a contradiction, and it might be counter-intuitive, but that is the kind of praise that captivates My heart. I am searching for true worshipers who would worship me no matter how much it costs them. With them My Spirit will always abide.

When you lift your hands up in the midst of trouble, when you sing a song of praise or raise up a heart of thanksgiving to Me, it brings Me such delight. It is such a lovely sight, so precious in My eyes.

When you bring to Me the sacrifice of praise, something wonderful will change in your heart. Faith will begin to arise, and you will know that you know with increasing certainty that I am coming to save you. And you will be brought to a deeper level of understanding My heart.

So the next time you sing to Me “Hosanna!” even though your heart is breaking, know that I take it into account. I note the cost with which you gave praise to Me, and I will return it back to you a good measure, pressed down, shaken together and running over.

When you praise me with “Hosanna!” – “Oh, save!” – in times of trouble, know that help is on the way. My arm is not too short to save, and I am coming for you.

I love your sacrifices of praise. Close your eyes and feel My pleasure. Trust Me, honor Me, wait for Me — I will surely come and save you.”

Finding God in Heartbreak

It wasn’t something I planned on when I set out on the journey.

With a heart full of possibilities and eyes ablaze with hope, I set out on the road of life. I anticipated love, kindness, joy, fulfilled dreams. I didn’t count on the road being a little difficult to navigate, the journey a little rough-going.

I did not expect that I would get lost (a time, or two… or twenty), fall down and hurt myself, hurt others, have others hurt me.

I most certainly did not foresee that along the course of the journey, I would get so terribly lost and beaten down that I’d lose all will to continue.

I spent almost half my life in dark depression and pain. Lost, broken, and plagued by suicidal thoughts, I couldn’t see any way out of the tangled forest no matter how much I wanted to.

I was, and still am, sensitive — I’ve recently begun to see that as a gift from God, but back then, I had no idea how to navigate the journey whilst keeping my bruise-like-a-peach heart intact. The little nuances of life, and the people it brought with it, had the ability to pierce my heart to its core.

I was young, lost in a jumbled maze of pain, and I thought that I only had 2 options. The first was to allow the darkness to swallow me in, because I was just too tired to keep fighting. The second was to build a solid fortress around my heart and lock myself in it, anything to protect myself from pain.

I learned the hard way that those weren’t really options at all. They were just two sides of the same coin, each one after the other pulling me deeper down the rabbit hole.

I kept myself locked in that self-made fortress, alone but safe… or so I thought. Sure, those walls may have kept others out, but they also kept all the pain in. There was no room for my hurting heart to breathe, and no way for all the pain to leave. I was locked in with me, and in there, the pain spread like an infection.

In that fortress, the darkness grew wild like weeds in an abandoned garden. Pain was good fertilizer, and the darkness sprung up tall, tangling and spreading, crowding over me till it blocked out the sunlight.

I spent so many years wandering, lost in a prison of my own making.

I wandered for years, and by the time I turned 18, I was in a depression so deep that I despaired of ever being free again. The pain in my heart had become so acute, and so consistent, it reached an intensity that I hadn’t known the human heart was capable of containing.

I kept pushing people away. But in my heart, the little girl that was trapped there kept crying out, “Don’t give up on me! Don’t let me push you away. Give it one more try!”

I was so confused and lost, and I was desperate to be free from it all…

But salvation was near. One day, at the point where I had reached the end of myself, God showed up.

He stormed that fortress like a valiant knight, and He broke through those walls I had so carefully built up all those years.

But it wasn’t violent, or loud, or scary like I’d thought it would be. He was gentle, and kind, and so, so full of love. It was His love that did it. It melted the walls and chains that had bound me for so long, and it washed my heart clean (I literally felt a cleansing flow from heaven come down upon me, filling me, warming me… and when it was over, my heart & mind felt SO clean, cleaner than I’d felt in more than 10 years).

He spoke tenderly to me. He showed me that all those other things I had been running after, thinking that they would cure the ache in my heart, were mere shadows pointing to the real answer – Jesus. My heart was built for Him, and it would always ache apart from Him. The pain and loneliness were meant to be escorts, road signs, pointing me to Him.

I can’t say exactly where or when it happened — I think it’s pretty much a life-long journey, even though there are definitive landmarks along the way — but the Lord cleaned me up and healed my broken heart.

It took a fair bit of coaxing and a LOT of help, but I gradually allowed Him to clean up the garden of my heart. It had been left wild and untended for so long, and I had a bad habit of rebuilding those broken walls, so it took quite some time before it even began to resemble a healthy garden again.

It didn’t happen all at once, mostly because I think He knew that my heart would likely die from the pain of it. He did it gently, tenderly, revealing one wound at a time and then cleaning it out before covering it with ointment for healing.

All those years I had spent wandering in the dark, He redeemed. I saw them as wasted years, but He didn’t. His promise to me was, “I will restore to you the years that the swarming locust has eaten..” (Joel 2:25)

All the things I was ashamed of about me, things that I thought were worthless and ugly, He said, “I’ll take them. I’ll take those ashes, I’ll take them all.” And in return, He gave me beauty. (Isaiah 61:3)

He turned my rags of despair into a glorious gown of rejoicing. He made something beautiful out of the mess and ugliness. It’s just in His nature to do that.

Looking back, I see how every moment of my life – every pain, every hurt, every disappointment – led me into the arms of God.

Every broken sign on that broken road was pointing me straight to Him.

I didn’t see it then, but I know it now. Every pain and heartbreak served as a fog-horn calling out to me in the darkness, “You need Me. You were made for Me. I love you, I want you, and I will do everything I can to bring you to My side.”

Hosea 2:14 is the perfect picture of God’s pursuit of my heart — back then, and in every other season since — “Therefore I am now going to allure her; I will lead her into the wilderness and speak tenderly to her.”  The wilderness is a place of barrenness, emptiness, where we are cut off from all our natural resources… it is also the place where we find that God is all we have, and come to realize that God is all we need.

Being in wilderness is painful, scary, and just downright hard. But it is also the process that brings us to this: Who is this coming up from the wilderness leaning on her beloved?” (Song of Songs 8:5)

God is a gentleman — He will not barge His way into where He is not wanted. But He is also a passionate lover — He will woo, and pursue, and will not relent until He has won our hearts.

He is doing everything He can to make you His, and He will use anything to do it. Even heartbreak.

The road may be broken, the journey a little rough-going. But friend, wherever you are on the journey, know that it is a road blessed by God and it is leading you straight to Him.
