Godly Wives: Dealing With Your husband’s Pornography Addiction (by Sheila Gregoire)

A guest post. Godly Wives is a space where women talk candidly and honestly about real issues in marriage.

Most women are blindsided when they discover their husband has a pornography or sex addiction.

Many wives struggle to deal with that realization while their world comes crashing down and the bottom falls out of the marital basket they were trusting in. It can be a devastating and disorienting experience and it takes a big toll on their self-esteem.

It’s not uncommon for a wife to wonder why she wasn’t enough to keep her husband from straying outside of the marriage. That “enough” takes in almost everything from feeling not interesting enough, not loving enough, not thin enough, not sexy enough, and so on. In addition to those feelings is the compounded emotions of feeling disconnected from him and for some time now. Unfortunately, and mistakenly, many women fear they are the problem and spend a lot of time and effort trying to be the ideal spouse.

His turning away from you to pornography exposes a lack on his part, not yours. His looking at porn is not about you. His interest, desire and connection should be all about his wife, not about a counterfeit. Pornography robs a wife of playing a central role in his life and she feels demeaned and replaced by an air-brushed picture on a screen.

So what can a wife do? How does she recover a foundation for her own self-esteem and a roadmap to go forward?

Honestly, there are no easy answers but there are a few things we know about the trauma this causes wives–and how to help.

1. Recognize that it is trauma.

The closer you are to someone who betrays you the more profound the trauma. Therapists call this “relational trauma” and it ranks right up there with all the other traumas. Because as human beings we are wired to connect and it is a brutal experience to have that connection betrayed. Women often report that they feel “crazy” or “not themselves” after such a discovery.

Some of the more common symptoms of relational trauma include:

• Fear and/or anxiety
• Outbursts of anger or rage
• Intrusive thoughts of the trauma
• Feelings of self-blame or responsibility
• Feelings of panic or feeling out of control
• Sadness or depression
• Feelings of detachment
• Feelings of worthlessness or being broken
• Preoccupation with body image
• Difficulty falling or staying asleep
• Hyper-vigilance
• Feelings of helplessness

It’s normal after a betrayal to feel and act this way.

2. You must grieve.

It’s going to come as a major sucker punch. You’ll feel betrayed, and dirty, and angry. That’s natural. Likely you knew something was wrong, and you suspected something, but you couldn’t put your finger on it. Now you know, and very likely the feelings are overwhelming. People often arrive on this blog the night they discover it, and they find posts talking about it and pour out their hurt in the comments. That hurt is raw and very real.

That’s okay. Give yourself some grace to be upset. Give yourself some time to yell at God about it, to wrestle this through, and to cry. You don’t have to fix anything overnight, and sometimes if we try too hard to fix it right now we do more damage. At times, when we first find out something so devastating, we’re tempted to say, “It’s okay, I know you didn’t mean it, let’s just forget it and go back to normal” because we’re afraid to face what this means.

But sometimes we need to admit brokenness. If we don’t admit it, it can’t be fixed. And it could be that what God is going to make out of the pieces will be different from what you started with, but that doesn’t mean it won’t also be beautiful. Grieve, and give God time to work. Don’t deny the gravity of the hurt. And don’t deny the gravity of what porn does to a marriage, either! But if you really want to spice up your marriage, then you can watch awek melayu sex videos hot together!

3. Don’t isolate. Get help. Walk in the light.

Many women don’t want to “expose their husbands” and so carry the burden of “the secret” as well as their own trauma.

As a church, we need to bring this to light.

There is so much ignorance around the whole pornography problem. It truly does ensnare people, making it almost impossible for them to function normally sexually with a human being. What becomes arousing is an image, and they become so focused on masturbation and pornography that a relationship isn’t sexy anymore. And it’s too much work! Once you start using porn, too, it rarely stays with the tame stuff. People will seek out more and more hard core stimulation. Eventually, they may even act things out. This isn’t people just looking at something to get their jollies; this is something that can all too easily turn into an addiction. Single men who are interested in casual dates or hook ups may use these sex apps.

And that’s why you must bring light to it. You can’t let it stay a secret. He needs help, but so do you. You will likely need someone to walk through this process with you, and that’s okay. More churches need to provide support for couples going through this. And most pastors have dealt with this at length. So talk to your pastor and find out what support your church offers.

It is not enough for a husband to apologize and promise never to do it again. You wouldn’t accept that of an alcoholic; you would ask him or her to go to AA meetings. There’s such shame involved with porn because it’s sexual, but the admonition from the Bible doesn’t change. James 5:16 says, “confess your sins one to another”. Confession should be a regular part of the Christian life. If a husband admits he uses porn, apologizes, but then asks that his wife not say anything and is unwilling himself to seek any help, then he hasn’t really repented.

True repentance is always accompanied by true humility, and that means that someone will seek help. I’m not saying tell everyone you know. I’m saying tell one person who can hold you accountable; one person who can call your husband or take him out for coffee periodically and look him in the eyes and challenge him on what he’s doing. During those conversations, even something as simple as sharing beans that won’t upset your gut can help create a comfortable setting where honest dialogue and meaningful accountability can take place. Coffee Catering Nashville can provide freshly crafted beverages for church gatherings, men’s groups, and community events, creating a warm and welcoming atmosphere that encourages meaningful conversations and fellowship.

Pray about who that one person should be, but do find that one person for him. And then find one person for you, too. One person that you can pour your heart out to, and can help guide you as you deal with this, move on to forgiveness, and rebuild.

4. You Must Set Boundaries

Whatever you tolerate will continue. I wish people could understand this earlier–even when they’re dating. If you tolerate a little bit of porn, it will continue until it’s a lot.

If you don’t want this to happen again,  you must set boundaries. That isn’t being vengeful; it’s just being smart. If your husband had an affair at work, you’d likely want him to find another job. You’d want something to change so that he won’t fall into it again.

And this should be the same thing. I don’t know what those boundaries will look like for your family; they could involve computer controls, or getting rid of the internet temporarily. They could mean choosing to share computers and cell phones so that there is no longer any secrecy. Perhaps sharing passwords. Maybe it might mean setting “technology free” hours at home, where all screens go off at 9:00 pm, so that it’s relationship time and you know you have his attention, so you can share together to do couple’s activities like watching tv together or make love and you can even add accessories as a remote controlled vibrator so everything is more exciting at these times.

One warning about boundaries, though. It is must easier to build trust again if you know that there is someone else helping your husband set those boundaries, and someone else holding him accountable. It’s not a good situation to feel as if you have to monitor your husband’s every move. That sets up a very unhealthy dynamic, where you’re constantly on the watch for him to mess up.

But for the men reading this, know that your wife will be able to trust you easier if you have an accountability partner. So don’t shy away from finding someone to talk to!

Rebuilding trust and rebuilding your sex life takes time, but it is possible. But it is only possible if you admit the gravity of the problem, get some help, and truly repent and become humble before God. You both need God’s help. You both need outside help. And you both will need some time.

5. Learn how to take care of yourself.

Be self-compassionate. Do things that help you feel stronger or more grounded. Exercise. Pray. Find a pilates class. And above all be patient with your own process.

6. Learn about trauma and triggers that reactivate the trauma.

Understanding will help you be less reactive and more forgiving when you are. Many women describe the experience of being “triggered” as being on a roller coaster. One day you feel fine and somewhat normal and the next something small can trigger feelings of anger, grief, fear, and loss.

7. Don’t give up and don’t give in.

Healing is a journey and in this case requires the deep soul work that takes time and great compassion. Insist that he get help. In the case of sexual compulsivity or addiction being sorry is not enough. Work and help is required.

I’ve always said that a man who says he is sorry but who refuses to admit his fault to anyone else is not really sorry. Real repentance is accompanied by confession and accountability. James 5:16–Confess your faults one to another, and pray one to another, that you may be healed!

8. Take heart!

You may be familiar with the term post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) but not as familiar with the term post traumatic growth. Post traumatic growth are positive changes that can occur as a result of coping with a traumatic event. Women get through this. Post traumatic growth can lead you to a stronger sense of yourself as well as a deeper and richer life that comes from moving through a difficult and deepening experience.

Know Your God: Resistance to Hearing God’s Voice

The Know Your God series was birthed in January this year when I felt the Spirit of God hovering over these words, “Know your God”. Follow along here as I share revelation + practical ways for you to get caught up in the Romance of God… and fall in love with Him all over again.

~

The greatest human needs can be summed up with this one truth: Man was made to walk with God. Every longing you have ever known finds its genesis in this fact.

We were fashioned for oneness and hardwired for intimacy. Our soul knows, in the deepest level of its consciousness, that we were meant to walk and talk with God in the garden as Adam did. We got separated from Him at Eden, and we spend our whole lives searching for a way back into that secret paradise.

We inherited Adam’s broken identity, and we pendulum between doubt and faith. Our phone line to God got a lot more interference than it was meant to. But we have great news: Jesus, the second Adam, has made a way for us back to Eden. In Him we have the promise of the restoration of the full glory that was intended for mankind in the Garden.

Today we will look at some things that commonly interfere/resist our communication with God… and how we can make our way back to Eden.

Resistance #1: Unbelief

Adam and Eve walked with God in the garden. Unhindered, uncovered, unashamed. They walked freely with God, just as they were, fully rested in the fact that God knew them and loved them.

The woman fell when she began to doubt God’s heart for her – the serpent said, “God has been lying to you! He’s holding you back from the good stuff because He wants to control you. He doesn’t have your best interests at heart. Fight for yourself because He’s not going to fight for you.” The woman chose to believe him, letting in fear and doubt that clouded her vision of God.

And we all Eve’s daughters have inherited that same weakness. We question God’s love for us. We wonder if He is real. We carry that sneaking suspicion in our hearts that God doesn’t really care for our well-being. We have learned so well to be self-sufficient that we’ve created a world that doesn’t need God. We get tired of waiting on God so we make do with what we can, thinking that He just doesn’t speak any more. We’ve got real good at making the best life we know how on our own.

Just like Eve took the fruit to get wisdom to be like God, we grab onto whatever can feed the deep hunger in our hearts. And all the while, as God had warned Eve, we are dying inside.

But beloved, it has never been God’s intention to hold back any good thing from Eve or us. All the wisdom and goodness and delights of this world had been prepared for the arrival of Adam & Eve – it was theirs, and ours, for the taking. All God wanted was for them to explore and discover it with Him.

The solution:

God’s solution to our unbelief is simple: Jesus. He said in Mark 6:9, “The work of God is this: To believe in the One He has sent.” Jesus is the light pointing out the path back to the Father’s side, and He is the way by which we get there. We are only able to do the work of God, or to please Him, when we have faith in Jesus (Hebrews 11:6).

If you’re anything like me, you’re probably asking, “Yes I know I need to have faith, but how do I get there?” and to that I’d say that it’s all a journey. Faith and confidence in God grows as we get to know Him and His love for us personally. All it takes is for you to be willing to be willing (not a typo!). We have been given the grace to be able to say like that man in Mark 9:24, “I do (want to) believe; help me overcome my disbelief!”

I promise you that He will, beloved. It might take some time, but He will do it.

Resistance #2: Unforgiveness / Unresolved Offenses

There will be places in our hearts that God has to heal before we are ready to set off on the road to trusting God. These places of hurt, pain, rejection, bitterness, and offense are like that one really obnoxious relative at family gatherings – loud, ubiquitous, and impossible to get rid of. They are a source of shame, and no matter what we do they just won’t go away. They interrupt any conversation you’re having and demand for your instant attention.

Unforgiveness and unresolved issues in our hearts interrupt our communication with God in that way. They are voices so loud that they’re impossible to ignore. The moment a desire to get close to God is ignited in your heart, they chime in loudly, “Are you sure God wants to talk to the likes of you? You haven’t been praying or reading your Bible, you’re not worthy of His attention. God isn’t interested in you just like your parents were never interested in you. He’s just going to reject you just like everyone else does.” And the litany goes on and on in a never-ending tirade.

Want to begin opening your heart up to the voice of God? Shut off those voices by making sure that all bitterness and unforgiveness is dealt with.

The solution:

  1. Carve out a couple of hours to just sit quietly with your journal, Bible, and maybe some soft worship music playing in the background (if it helps).
  2. Ask God, “Lord, I want to be free from unforgiveness. Please show me now if there were times that I’ve been hurt, and who I need to forgive.”
  3. Focus on Jesus as you wait. A picture might flash across your mind of something that someone said/did to you, or a memory pop up in your heart. It could be something that happened just yesterday, or that took place when you were two. It might be a seemingly insignificant event and you might not feel that it had affected you, but I’ve come to realize that the Holy Spirit knows my heart better than I do and when He reveals something, He’s usually pretty spot on about it.
  4. Looking at that picture/memory, tell Jesus how you honestly felt at that time. It’s ok to be totally honest with Him if you felt anger or all other kinds of “sinful” emotions, He can take it, promise.
  5. Ask Jesus, “Lord, now please show me where you were in this picture.” Wait on Him and let Him show you where He was & what He was doing when you were going through that trauma/hurtful event. Let His love minister deeply to your soul.
  6. Choose to forgive (because forgiveness is a choice) whoever it was that hurt/offended you. Say, “Jesus, I choose to forgive (name of person) for (be specific about what they did and how that made you feel). I release (name of person) into the freedom of my forgiveness, and I ask You to remove all bitterness/unforgiveness that’s in my heart. Heal me and cleanse me from any defilement that might have come through this event.”
  7. Take some time to linger in the healing work of His Spirit. When you are ready to move on, repeat steps 2-6 until no more memories come to mind.

Some hurts run deep, and the closer a person is to us the deeper the hurt they inflict. Don’t be surprised if some of the same memories pop up in the days following your “forgiveness cleanse” – you might have to repeat the forgiveness prayer (step 6) many times before the hurt is fully resolved in your heart. It’s like peeling an onion; some have many layers and some only a few, but keep going at it and you’ll reach the heart one day.

 Resistance #3: Demonic Interference

Most of the interferences we encounter can be resolved with inner healing, but there are some that require deliverance. It could be an open door from a covenant that your ancestor made with an idol, or an inner vow you made in a moment of desperation, or maybe something you allowed into your Spirit through your eye gate (be very careful about the things you watch). I won’t go into this point in detail here, but if think that there is some demonic interference in your life, please drop me an email for us to pray through, discern, and talk it over together. I will link you up to trustworthy ministers who specialize in ministering healing & deliverance with the love of God.

Just remember: You are never too lost or too dark for God. He loves you and He will do whatever He can to bring you back to the intimacy and glory of Eden. And when you return, He will run to you and welcome you home with welcome arms.

Beloved, we aren’t the only ones searching for the way back to Paradise. God, the Almighty God Himself, is searching for hearts that He can bring Paradise into. He wants this restoration so much more than we could ever know, and everything He’s done since Genesis has been in preparation of the day that Paradise can come to earth and dwell with man again.

That day is coming soon and when it does this time, it will be here to stay. People get ready.

Know Your God: The Ways God Speaks

The Know Your God series was birthed in January this year when I felt the Spirit of God hovering over these words, “Know your God”. Follow along here as I share revelation + practical ways for you to get caught up in the Romance of God… and fall in love with Him all over again.

~

Many of us know with our minds that God speaks. The Bible says so, and we know theoretically that He wants a relationship with us. We just need a little help in getting that theory to become reality.

A question I get often is, “How do I hear the voice of God?”  I struggled with this question for years and years, often ending up in tears of condemnation and fear — Why couldn’t I hear God? Was there something wrong with me, with my heart? Was my heart so hardened that I wouldn’t allow God to speak to me? Was I so sinful that God was displeased and didn’t want to come close to me? Was I unlovable and that’s why God didn’t love me / want to speak to me?

I eventually learned that we cannot start off getting to know God by how-to’s and a list of do’s and dont’s – we don’t approach Him with a formula or by looking at how good/deserving we are. That only leads to strife, condemnation, pride, fear.

He is a person, and we must begin by getting to know Him – His ways, His heart, His personality. And the more we get to know Him, the clearer His voice will be to us because we have learned to recognize the Person behind the voice.

So we begin to address the question of, “How do I hear God’s voice?” by answering this: How does God speak?

God speaks in many ways. There is a depth to His personality that we could spend eternity discovering, but here are 5 foundational truths that I have found to help me in my discovery of Him.

1. God speaks to be heard by you.

Yes, YOU. The way He speaks to you is as unique as the personality He gave you and the journey He has planned for you. God speaks to us in our unique love language(s) and He will speak to you in ways that you can receive.

He is not some far-away elusive God who wants to remain aloof. He wants to be found, wants to be known. He speaks your language – if you are a nature lover, He will speak to you through nature. If you are a music person, He will use music to speak to you. It doesn’t matter if you like shopping, or reading, or painting… He will speak to you through them all because God is far less religious than we are. Nothing is too little nor too shallow for Him to communicate with us by.

He has been breathing life into nothingness from Genesis, and continues to speak life into the mundane – that is why He often speaks to us in the most common and ordinary ways.

2. God speaks in the little everyday moments; in the most common and ordinary of ways.

Some people feel that God is a God who is way up there; distant, detached, untouchable. Some people think that only the very religious, holiest, elite, have access to the heart of God.

Over the years, I have found that God delights in revealing Himself to ordinary people. Not only to those who fast and pray, the pastors, the prophets, the ministers… though He loves to reveal Himself to them too. But I have found that He also loves showing Himself to the unlikeliest people in society –the young, the old, the hidden, the shy, the quiet ones, the ordinary.

It doesn’t matter who you are or where you are, because God wants to be your best friend. He wants to do life with you, to just be with you in your everyday life. He could speak through a random advertisement on the train, or in the lyrics of a song, or the words of a child. A sentence in that book that you’re reading might cause your heart to leap, or maybe a scene in a movie that brought you to tears – all these are the little ways that God tugs at our hearts.

What moves you? What makes you come alive? That is the way that God hardwired you to be, and that is the way in which He will speak to you often. Don’t disdain the little, ordinary moments. The best Bible stories are the ones about encounters between ordinary people and an extraordinary God, and I think it’s because they inspire us to believe that our ordinary lives could be all lit up with rays of eternity.

3. God speaks because He wants a relationship with you.

You see, He has everything in the whole universe at His fingertips and yet human beings are the only ones whom He will give everything for. He is looking for friends, not servants. He wants covenant relationship, not religious piety.

God speaks not just to tell us what to do or give us direction, though He often does that as a Father would a child. Neither does He only speak to rebuke or scold us. He speaks because He wants close friendship with you. Everything else flows out of this deep desire for His heart to be joined to yours.

He wants to tell you what makes Him happy and what makes Him sad. What He’s thinking about and what are the burdens on His heart. He has many servants, but few friends. He is looking for those who would go past the outer courts, into the Holy of Holies, where He can share His secrets and the deep things of His heart.

4. God speaks in creative and romantic ways.

Don’t put Him in a box or limit Him. He might surprise you one day with a beautiful rainbow, or a majestic sunset. Or maybe a beautiful flower by the roadside of your usual jogging route.

You might be having a particularly lousy day, and suddenly a stranger does something nice for you that makes the whole day better. Or maybe you’re losing faith in a particular situation, and then you hear a song or see a billboard that talks about hope. He knows what you need in that moment, and He delights in delighting you with new expressions of love.

When you’ve found the way that God speaks to you – through dreams, or Scripture, or nature, or songs, etc – remember not to put Him back in that box. He might change the ways through which He speaks to you, because He wants most for you to know Him more & more. It is a continuous journey of discovering new things about Him everyday – and isn’t that what makes this relationship so exciting?

5. God speaks with love.

Sometimes He has to rebuke and guide us, but His rebuke is always full of love.

If you hear words of condemnation, loathing, or rejection, it is not God’s voice. His rebuke is always kind, His chastisement full of love. His remonstrations will always lead us and empower us to repentance and change, not condemnation and paralysis.

God is love, and His voice will always be wrapped with love and gentleness.

Next week, we will talk about the practical ways in which we can learn to hear the voice of God. But until then, take some time each day to observe what’s around you and say, “Lord, what do you want to talk about today?”

It takes practice to keep aware of the little ways that God speaks to you, but start practicing and you will see amazing things. Ask Holy Spirit to help you notice Jesus in your everyday moments; that’s what He’s there for and what He loves to do. A good practice is to start each day with this prayer the moment you wake up, “Holy Spirit, be my best friend today. I want us to keep in step with each other throughout the day; help my heart to sense your heart even when things get busy.”

Keep praying this everyday and wait and see what the Lord will do for you!
