Prophetic Mentorship: How To Be Mentored In The Prophetic

Many years ago, I was a young girl whose prophetic gift was just beginning to awaken. It was exciting, exhilarating… and it seemed to get me in more trouble than all of my previous years combined!

I was constantly sticking my foot in my mouth and other people’s mouthssharing prophecies at the wrong time, speaking with harshness, and carrying a pride that I was the one who “heard God”. I made many mistakes, both costly and not-so-costly, and offended a whole lot of people.

I was basically a ticking time bomb of “raw zeal waiting for a place to happen”, and it is truly by the grace of God that I grew past that stage with most of my soul intact. What I really needed was a mentor.

Mentors Needed

Most people are wary of mentoring the prophetically gifted, especially those who are just learning to prophesy. Why? Fledgling prophetic people are often stubborn, proud, rebellious, and unteachable — and it requires a great deal of time, patience, love, and forbearance to walk together dealing with each of these issues. But beneath the many layers of “roughness”, these prophetic people are precious gemstones that, once uncovered, will be a huge blessing to the world. The mark of a good mentor is that of a servant-leader (it will often require us to lay down our life & our rights, giving without receiving back), and not many leaders are ready to serve people in such mentoring relationships.

God is searching for prophetic mentors, those who are willing to pay the price to parent a new generation of powerful leaders He is raising across the earth — those who would be patient to wait past the immaturity of the rising prophetic person, to get past the dirt, and see the gold & His plan for them. God is looking for those who will lead by example, modelling servant-leadership.

The great news is that God is raising up a wave of prophetic fathers and mothers who will take the emerging prophetic under their wing.

These fathers and mothers have been given a special grace for the task (because without grace, they will be tempted at times to throw up their hands and give up!) and to be just as tenacious in their love as their disciples can be stubborn. The tenacity of their love will be stronger than the stubbornness of their prophetic protégé, and that will enable them to love the growing prophetic person into maturity.

How To Be Mentored

Whether you are wanting to grow your prophetic gift (everyone has a prophetic gift to some measure) or you have a prophetic call on your life you want to walk into, a mentor is one of the provisions of God for you to get there. Each of the different five-fold giftings mentor in very different ways.

1. Ask.

Firstly, ask God. There are seasons when He wants to tutor us directly, and seasons when He will teach us through mentors. Ask God if He has a mentor for you in this season, and if so then ask Him to show you who it is.

Once you know who you’re called to align with and learn from, ask that person if they would be your mentor. I can’t tell you how many times I’ve heard people say, “If so-and-so is meant to be my mentor/pray for me/give me a word, God will tell them.” I used to say such things too, until Holy Spirit began to show me the irresponsibility in that statement which has its root in the fear of rejection.

Our spiritual growth is our responsibility, no one else’s. Yes, God will speak to the prophet who is meant to mentor you, but He will speak to you too. A key factor to spiritual growth is hunger. Elisha pursued Elijah, and he ended up with Elijah’s double portion! Take charge of your destiny and spiritual growth. Ask God for discernment, and pursue boldly the mentor God has chosen for you.

2. Define The Relationship.

Once you’ve found your mentor and “sealed the deal”, you’re ready to begin your journey! Sit down with your mentor and define the relationship — What are both of your expectations? Are both of you on the same page? What are the boundaries of this relationship?

There is a difference between a coach, a mentor, and a spiritual parent. Each one has an increasing degree of access and priority, but also a corresponding increase in the level of responsibility required.

For example, a person to whom I am a spiritual mother would have more access to my time, resources, and trust than a student that I coach in the classroom Antioch Academy, and the student would have more access to me than a person who isn’t part of the Antioch community. But the person to whom I am a spiritual mother would also have more expected of them. I require a much higher level of honor, submission and responsibility in my relationships with my spiritual children than with those I merely coach or mentor.

What level of intimacy are you prepared and willing to pay the price for? Each of those relationships can be blessing. Ask God for wisdom to choose the one that’s best suited to your needs and capacity in this season.

Define the relationship, then resolve to be committed to it. This commitment will help you stay the course, especially when the road gets rough. A mentoring relationship will push some of your hot buttons and prod at some of your raw spots; this helps you to grow, but it will be painful at times and that’s when your commitment to God’s process needs to be stronger than your instinct to retreat.

It is important to note that if you don’t really take hold of the benefits of mentorship, you can be in a mentoring relationship for years and never ever get through the preparation stage. The following are points you need to keep in mind if you have a mentor.

3. Be Transparent.

Be totally transparent with your mentor. Let your walls down and let them see what’s really in your heart — the good, the bad, and especially the ugly. They need to know what’s in there so that they can help you identify what God is doing in you.

It will mean you being vulnerable and admitting where you fail and mess up. It also means being prepared to let them come into those places and point them out. Yup. It’s never fun to have somebody’s fingers in our soft spots, and really not fun to have our weaknesses pointed out. But if you will let a mentor come in, you will identify the flesh + die to self + grow so much more quickly.

4. Be Humble, Submission Is Key To Growth.

By golly, this is a tough one. Many people behave in a way that communicates, “I would love to have a mentor that gives me direction, affirmation, prayer support, and help through the tough times… but the rest of the time I want to do things my way!”  That’s not mentorship, that’s really bad parenting that results in spoilt children.

Submission is key to accelerated growth. Your mentor has been given to you by God, so trust in His process and submit to them. It won’t always be fair; not every test and chisel that your mentor will give you will be fair. In fact, quite the opposite is true. You will probably find that it is quite unfair but that is all part of the testing. It is all part of the process! Let the Lord use your mentor and submit.

Submission cannot be conditional. “I will submit when it comes to advice, impartations and decrees, but I won’t submit when he/she tells me to die to a certain area of my flesh.”  Complete submission builds our character, which leads to maturity.

Get confirmation about every direction you sense God gives you with your mentor. Submit every revelation you get to them so that you can discern, learn, and rise up.

An aspect that needs to be addressed in fledgling prophetic people is an aloofness, an independent and argumentative spirit. One way to work against our pride is to have a teachable spirit. Knowing it all or “hearing God for yourself” can lead to having an unteachable spiritual attitude, which leads to deception. One tell-tale sign of having such a spirit is getting defensive when a mentor is giving advice.

A good guideline is: If it is a corrective word, don’t close up. Try not to justify yourself. Even if you don’t agree with everything that is said, some of it may be true. Usually more of the advice is true than we first want to admit.

Don’t skip steps in dealing with the Spirit. Some lessons – such as servanthood, submission, humility, discernment – are foundational, and if you try to avoid them they will just arise in your life in another way. Those who miss the lessons God wants them to learn have to “go around the mountain one more time”. Some people go around the mountain so many times because of their pride and inability to submit that they never get out of that cycle.

This is a really tough one to live out, but I promise you that if you do, the rewards are far greater. Not only will you emerge from that season with a deep humility that is so pleasing to the Lord, you will also have established trust and earned the respect of your mentor and those around you. You will be positioned, ready to be launched and entrusted with the mysteries of God.

5. Be Prepared For Tests.

The Lord uses the waiting + preparation time to season us. Along with this comes tests to gauge how ready we are, and whether we are seasoned to be launched out.

Cindy Jacobs says, “An important measure is in the words the disciple uses to communicate what he or she is receiving from the Lord. I watch those with whom I am working to see how they are coming along in their servant-leader growth. Occasionally, I will give them a verbal test to see if they will rise to the bait in pride. This may be in the form of asking them to do something that might seem menial, and then listening to their responses. This area of testing is one where many young leaders flake out on the call. They don’t want to pay the price to be tempered.

The area of presumption is one stronghold which many prophetic people become blinded to. It comes from presuming that we know what to do without first checking it with other leaders. This is where a good relationship with your elders, pastor, or mentor is vital.

A good mentor will work with an emerging prophetic person in the area of pacing themselves personally. Prophets, who are not properly tempered, have one speed: fast forward! Everything they hear from God has an intangible immediacy about it. Most prophets would burn themselves out without tempering, as well as everyone around them.”

Wise leaders know to watch those in their church who are prophetically anointed for at least six months before approaching them in any way. Many of these gifted ones become angry and just move on. They fail the test. Just because a person is anointed doesn’t mean they have been proven trustworthy for the higher calling. God can anoint anyone. He’s more interested in your maturity & character than your anointing.

This is so closely tied to humility and submission. Trust God, and trust the mentor God has chosen for you because the one He’s chosen for you will love you and want only the best for you. Submit unconditionally, serve and obey even when it seems unfair — both God and your mentor want you to pass the test and launch into the fullness of your destiny!

5. Align And Run With Your Mentor.

The mentor that comes from God and carries His Father’s heart will want to see you soar. They will set a pace for you to accelerate your growth in the Lord. Learn to run with them — this will mean an alignment not just in word or deed, but in your spirit as well.

The best way to align and run with your mentor is to serve and honor. Ask God what it means to be an ARMOUR-BEARER, and do it wholeheartedly. The armour-bearers will receive the double-portion of the mantle of their mentors.

A godly prophetic mentor will be one who runs with the Lord, in tune with His times & seasons. Run in pace with them. It might be a steep learning curve at first, so ask questions when you don’t understand. Keep communication channels open. Take the initiative to ask for help. Let your mentor help you keep up with their speed.

I believe a new generation of the prophetic is arising in the spirit of Malachi 4: 6, mentored by prophetic fathers + mothers God has called to take these fledgling prophetic under their wing and raise them up into the atmosphere of heaven.

A new dawn, a new breed, a fresh approach to growing in the prophetic — one that is rooted in fatherhood and covenant and the freedom in sonship. Exciting times!

Breaking Through Into Your Breakthrough

At the start of this year the Lord gave a word for 2017 that we are on the cusp of a pivotal season in the Kingdom, and this year will be a great season of victory for the children of God if we would seek Him, moving in alignment with Him + Throne Room wisdom. The Lord was also clear that we His children are called to take new territory and reclaim previous territory that have been stolen.

I was teaching in the Antioch Academy on Saturday when I felt the Spirit of the Lord come upon me and I began to prophesy, “In order to move forward, you need to go back. Look your painful memories squarely in the face, and let the light of God come through. When you do, your painful memories will become powerful testimonies. And the glory of God will shine through your life to the world.”

We’re entering into a month of breakthrough. Small increments of breakthrough are coming. God is not only restoring all the years the locusts have stolen from us, but also preparing us to take new ground – spiritually and literally!

HOPE is key in this season!

The enemy of our soul has launched targeted attacks in the very areas that we have been contending for. But this is a wonderful opportunity for us to overcome to the glory of God! Now more than ever, we should keep our gaze on Jesus Christ rather than on what the enemy is doing.

Don’t give up! Hold on to hope! Keep your eyes fixed on Jesus. Choose to align with HOPE, not fear!! What you behold is what you will become — look to the heavens, not earth nor hell. When the battle intensifies is when victory is greatest. Victory is at hand.

“Then he said, ‘Take the arrows,’ and the king took them. Elisha told him, ‘Strike the ground.’ He struck it three times and stopped. The man of God was angry with him and said, ‘You should have struck the ground five or six times; then you would have defeated Aram and completely destroyed it. But now you will defeat it only three times.'” — 2 Kings 13

Do not be discouraged if at first you don’t see your victory manifest. Breakthrough will first happen in the spiritual, then in the natural. Just because you can’t see it in the physical does not mean it isn’t happening in the spiritual. Keep on striking the ground!

Fruitfulness is coming upon us, and has already come. What has been barren and withered for so long will begin to revive and flourish. And the good news is? All that you need for breakthrough has already been given to you; it’s already there! The Lord has deposited that miracle within you and it will bear fruit as long as we walk in accordance with the principles of the Kingdom.

Aligning your heart with the principles of the Kingdom for victory:

  1. Prepare. I sensed the Lord say we’re not to ask Him for the breakthrough… because He’s already given it to us. Rather, we’re to ask God “What must I do to prepare my heart & life so it is good soil for that seed to bear fruit?”
  2. Persist. Stand at your post, don’t give up. Keep striking the ground. In the heat of the battle God will give you the strength you’ll need to press through, and then you’ll break through into victory. He who is faithful with little will be entrusted with more.
  3. Praise. Arise, beloved. Come into His presence through an offering of worship. There is a divine exchange waiting to happen. Release what is not of Him (fear, discouragement, greed, pride) for the things that come from His throne (godliness with contentment, wisdom, heavenly strategies).
  4. Partner. If we would be willing to humble ourselves, lay down our own agendas/ambitions, and work in partnership with God, these are the tools we will be given in the clash of the kingdoms.

a. Influence: He is going to enlarge our territory. New ground. Victory over the length and breadth of the land. And not just enlargement but increased depth in our influence. He will release the authority and anointing to impact our spheres of influence in deep and lasting ways.

b. Wisdom and Revelation: We will move in divine understanding. If we would lay aside our human wisdom and plans to take on His, we will begin to move in a higher realm. We will be able to take our places as “seated with Him in heavenly places” (Ephesians 2:6)  and become heavenly administrators of His will on earth.

c. Signs and Wonders: There will be an increase in the miracles and shekinah presence of the Lord. These signs and wonders will be signs that make the world wonder, and in wondering they will find God as their answer.

Beloved, this is our time. Arise, shine, for your light has come, and the glory of the LORD rises upon you!

Levels of Walking With God

Jesus says, “I tell you the truth, unless a kernel of wheat falls to the ground and dies, it remains only a single seed. But if it dies, it produces many seeds” (John 12:24).

This parable illustrates the levels of our walk with God.

1. Falling to the Ground: Tearing Down of Wrong Mindsets

This could also be called the “Infant stage” in a believers’ walk with God. Much like caring for an infant or a budding flower, this is a stage that is full of the Father’s grace and protectiveness. The believer’s spirit is not yet strong enough to take rigorous disciplines, and therefore it must only be nurtured, fed and nourished at this point. It is a season where the believer’s heart, mind, and spirit are being prepared and made ready for the harder task of surrendering his/her will to God. God does this by revealing who He is and who we are.

I have found that at this stage, there is a very strong emphasis on the unconditional love of God for the specific person. This is a vital part to the healing of the heart. Restoration work is done in the heart and mind – what I mean is that God will begin to surface issues of self-rejection, shame, unforgiveness, pride, etc., and bring healing and restoration in those areas. He will target wrong thought patterns, and teach the believer to start to see himself, his world, and God through the light of Truth.

To put it succinctly, the key word at this stage is “Identity”. When we begin to understand His identity and therefore begin to discover our identity in Him, the desire to walk close to Him will burst forth in our hearts.

When the believer’s identity and relationship with God is built up on the right foundation, he/she is ready to move to the next level.

2. Dying: Surrender of My Will to His Will

In the first stage, the believer’s identity is being reiterated, and I have found one name to be the core of all other facets of our identity – the name of “Beloved”. Henri Nouwen (1992) had the “inner conviction that the words ‘You are My beloved’ revealed the most intimate truth about all human beings.” Now I will expound on why I have come to believe that taking on the identity of Beloved is key to the second stage – the dying to self and surrendering all to God.

In all three biblical accounts of the baptism of Jesus (Matthew 3, Mark 1, Luke 3), God declared Jesus as His beloved, and the Holy Spirit descended like a dove upon Jesus. This is the only biblical account in which the Holy Spirit comes as a dove; in every other account He usually comes with fire and strong wind. Why is this so? I believe it is because Jesus knew and accepted His identity as Beloved of God (“Did you not know that I must be about my Father’s business?” Luke 2:49), and therefore had fully submitted Himself under God. He never did anything apart from God (John 5:19), and therefore Holy Spirit found in Jesus’ heart a perfect resting place, without having to strive against the flesh.

Someone else puts it this way, “There’s only one man who has ever received the Holy Spirit like a dove, and that is Jesus. That is because when the Holy Spirit came down to Jesus, Jesus was perfectly compatible, of one essence, and the Holy Spirit just snuggled in. He was at perfect peace in the person of Jesus. Jesus got the dove, but we get fire; we get the baptism of fire. And the reason is that God is not indifferent about having His full possession of you and me.”

Growing into our identity as Beloved goes hand-in-hand with submitting of our will to the will of God. It is a natural progression. The reason is because that is the picture of a beloved!

Song of Solomon 8:5 says, “Who is this coming up from the desert leaning on her lover?”  There is the picture of true lovers, the Lover who offers the strength of his arm, and the beloved who rests in her lovers’ strength. When we understand our Beloved-ness, surrendering to God is no longer a chore but a joy and a delight! In another sense, this submitting of my will to God’s will can also be called “voluntary helplessness”.

The above-mentioned scripture from Song of Solomon takes place as the lovers are coming out of the desert – that is often the place that God takes us so we learn to lean on Him.

In the desert, there are no resources, status, people, etc., only God. It is there that God teaches us how to let go of human reasoning, wisdom, and agenda; in short, dying to self. This is restated in Hosea 2, where God pursues His beloved till she has nowhere else to turn to except Him.

The fire and desert are part of God’s beautiful mercy and deep love for us! He loves us too much to let us go.

However, this stage of fire and/or desert will not make sense if we do not understand that it happens because we are so beloved. Most who did not press through stage one will not last long in this stage, because they might fall under confusion/condemnation thinking that God is a religious deity with a huge cane in His hand, ready to smack us every time we make a mistake. Or they might think that God has abandoned them. Both ways lead to a religious mindset. Religiosity is the work of man and the flesh, which means man relating to God according to man’s plans, instead of man living by God’s plans. This again proves my point that stage one (knowing who I am and knowing who God is), is necessary for stage two (surrendering to God).

In John 15, our Bridegroom beseeches His beloved to abide in Him and remain in His love. Jesus’ analogy of the Vine and the branches fully encapsulates what surrendering to God is all about.

  1. Apart from Jesus, I can do nothing that has lasting value. Every man-made plan will be utterly destroyed in the testing of fire (1 Corinthians 3:13, Hebrews 12:29) and the shaking that will come before Jesus’ return (Haggai 2:6-8, Hebrews 12:25-29).
  2. God is the gardener. It is He who gives us the will and grace to abide in Jesus! He is the one who grafts the branch into the Vine, and He is the one who keeps it there. He prunes and does all the work necessary for the branch to be able to bear fruit. Just as religiosity is the work of the flesh, likewise abiding in Christ cannot happen by human effort – there has to be a surrender to be able to surrender!
  3. Jesus is the Living Vine. He gave Himself fully for me by taking all my sin, shame and infirmity and dying in my place. He still gives Himself fully for me by interceding for me at the right-hand of God. Yesterday, today, and forever, all of Jesus is freely available for me. “All the vine possesses belongs to the branches. The vine does not gather from the soil its fatness and its sweetness for itself – all it has is at the disposal of the branches.”  Thus, our surrender to God is not the command of a narcissistic ruler, but one of an unselfish God of love who longs to give all of Himself in exchange for all of Him. It is a deal that is to our advantage, really, for we are exchanging our ashes for crowns, and getting pure wine in exchange for ordinary water. What a wonderful God! When I understand it this way, how can I help but want to surrender freely all of me for all of Him?
  4. I am the branch. The branch is that part of the Vine which produces the fruit, with which God desires to feed a hungry world. Andrew Murray says, “Such is the wonderful condescension of the grace of Jesus that, just as His people are dependant on Him, He has made Himself dependant on them. Without His disciples, He cannot dispense His blessing to the world…” A branch is dead on its own; it is only alive when connected to the Vine. All the fruit that the branch produces comes from the nourishment, life, and supplement of the Vine. Likewise, I have no ability to bear fruit apart from Jesus.

There is a call from the Throne of God to live a fasted lifestyle, choosing to die to self in every area. Jesus must be Lord of all, or He is not Lord at all. As you can tell, this stage can take a really long time to get through, and some sadly do not get through it but have chosen to remain in stage one. But those who choose surrender will enjoy the bounties of the next stage!

3. Bearing Much Fruit: The Fruit of A Surrendered Life

As mentioned above, we can only bear fruit when we abide in Christ (become empty + take on His fullness), and the fruit we bear will be for a dying world. For the events that are going to take place in our world, Christians need to abide so deeply in Christ that we will not be shaken by the things that happen all around us.

This stage comes with an increase of authority, anointing, favor, and responsibility. It is when the Father says, “It is time. You’re now ready to step into the flow of My purpose for your life.”

The Lord has so much He wants to give us, but in His love He will not give us what we cannot handle. Stages one and two are meant to prepare + mature us for stage three.

The world is crying out for the sons & daughters of God to arise and take their place as co-heirs with Jesus. Our generation needs us to reach maturity and bear fruit for their thirsty souls.

Beloved, arise!
