To please the King, I must listen to the King’s Chamberlain
Esther 2:9 says, “Esther was taken to the king’s palace and entrusted to Hegai, who had charge of the harem. She pleased him and won his favor. Immediately he provided her with her beauty treatments and special food. He assigned to her seven female attendants selected from the king’s palace and moved her and her attendants into the best place in the harem.”
Esther won the King’s favor over all the other fairest maidens in the land. From this I understand one thing: If I want to win the King’s heart, I must find favor with His chamberlain and listen to everything He tells me. Only the chamberlain has access to the intimate secrets of the King; only he can tell me what the King likes and dislikes, which the public eye does not know. Only the chamberlain knows what pleases the King.
And I have access to the Chamberlain of the King of kings. His name is Holy Spirit.
He is the one who knows the secrets of the heart of God and reveals them to us. He is the one who gives us the right food to eat by showing us the right sermons to listen to, the right places to go, the right people to be with, and by illuminating the Word of God.
Holy Spirit is also the one to provide the beauty treatments. Sometimes it is painful; we are baptized with fire in order that we would be purified and perfected. And fire is intense. It consumes everything that is consumable.
The prayer of the beloved in Songs 4:16 is, “Wake, north wind, and come, south wind! Blow on my garden, that its fragrance may spread everywhere. Let my beloved come into his garden and taste its choice fruits.”
The inner man is likened to a garden in the Songs of Solomon (E.g. Songs 4:12 & 16). As the Chamberlain of the King, Holy Spirit prepares us with the beauty that He knows will move the heart of God, which is also represented in Songs 4:16 as the King’s garden where He will find choice fruits. He is also the one, represented by the wind, who sends forth the fragrance which He has prepared in me, and brings it before the King. We must always seek the favor of, and listen to, the Holy Spirit.
